HOLA!

Time to brush up on my Spanish, as we leave for the Choluteca region of southern Honduras on February 5th.  This will be the 8th time (I have lost count) I have been to this area to work on various projects.  Although each year is different, each year is the same in so many ways.  Although I will miss welcoming our new buyers into their brand new homes in the Nashville area, it will be a great time to reflect on just how fortunate we are to live in Middle Tennessee.

We will arrive in Tegucigalpa, Honduras, the capital city around lunch time.

Arriving at Tegucigalpa, Honduras

It will be warm and we will probably stop at KFC for a bite before beginning the 4-hour drive to Choluteca, where we will rendezvous with others and drive another 1.5 hours to our home for the week, Hotel Barcelona, in San Marcos de Colon, Honduras, very close to the border with Nicaragua. The first floor of the hotel is a department store chain operated by WalMart.

This is our home for the week!

We will pick up our rental trucks and trek down the Pan American Highway, where you see something different every time.  Landslides are very common, and so are the ways they are fixed.

This is actually one of the neater road repairs you will see along the Pan American Highway in Honduras

This year, our group will be installing electricity into the homes of 21 families.  During the week, we will spend time with many old friends, and make a lot of new friends.  More details to come when we return!

See you again soon!

It’s that time again.

Here we are.  It’s that time of year once again.

Time to finish blowing leaves into your neighbor’s yard.  Time to put up the garden hoses.  Time for decorating.  Time for holiday parties.   So much to do in such little time.  Damn.

The busy holiday season starts with Thanksgiving, when we gather with family and friends to give thanks for what we have.

We cook.  We eat.  And then we eat some more.

Then we shop so there is more stuff to be thankful for next year.

But Thanksgiving is a lot more than that.  We just need to allow it to be.  Before the busy-ness of the season kicks in, take a few moments.  Relax.  Think and reflect.  (Eat just a little bit more too!)

We all have so much that we need to be thankful for and this song sums it all up:

After you reflect, say one more…

Thank You, Veterans!

Today is the official day marked to honor all of our Veterans, although we should honor them each and every day.

nashvillehomesblog.com

November 11th is the day we as Americans celebrate and honor the sacrifice of all U.S. Veterans.   This isn’t one of those holidays created by Hallmark.  It isn’t one of those holidays to give bankers a day off, although they are getting this Monday off!

It is a official day for all of us to say, “Thank You” to a veteran.

Let’s carry the tradition one step further and say ”Thank You” to the active-duty soldiers too!  And remember, those “thank-yous” aren’t confined to November 11th, they are deserved and appreciated every day!

But why November 11th?

Back in 1918, on the eleventh minute of the eleventh hour, of the eleventh day of the eleventh month, an armistice, or treaty of sorts, was signed to end hostilities in what we now call World War I.   It was called the Great War back then because no one was planning a sequel at…

Honduras Visit 2013 – The great news first!

Adobe Stove Pila Adobe Casa AdobeStoveCooking Casa and Clothesline Casa Plastic Sheet Roof Chicken Coop Lord's Prayer Espanol Hillside Village Village Road Village Cemetery Wood CasaJust one blog post cannot do justice in summing up everything that happens over a week’s time in a foreign country.   There is so much to tell about this year’s visit, but there is some really great news you need to read about first.

Over a year-and-a-half ago, young Marlon Sanchez fell from a tree and pulled his leg from his hip.  Surgeries at the local hospital were unsuccessful.  Last year, Jim Johnston and others from the Lawrenceburg Rotary Club met young Marlon and his family and decided to do whatever they could to help.  When returning home, Jim Johnston made contact with Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital and their surgical staff about helping this child.  Just recently, Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital and their surgical staff volunteered to perform the much needed surgery on Marlon.

Marlon is now six years old.  Yesterday, he and his mother Maria, boarded a plane in Tegucigalpa, Honduras headed to Nashville, accompanied by Jim Johnston and other members of the Lawrenceburg Rotary Club!  The surgery will take one day, followed by a week in the hospital, and then six weeks of rehab before they are able to return to their native Honduras.  There will be many expenses incurred during this procedure and visit, so if you would like to help, please contact the Lawrenceburg Rotary Club at 931.762.7917 or 931.762.4678.

Can you remember the first time you ever saw an airplane?  What about flush toilets and hot/cold running water?  Electric stoves?  Elevators?  The list goes on.  Marlon and his mother, Maria, will be seeing many things for the first time in their lives.  They will have no choice but to be overwhelmed, if not somewhat frightened with the experience that awaits them.  Please keep them in your prayers, and while you’re at it, say a prayer of thanks for Jim Johnston and Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital for making this life-changing surgery a reality for Marlon and his family.

Take a look at the above scenes from southern Honduras.  These scenes are not of the actual village where Marlon lives, but scenes we encountered during the 2013 electrical project performed by the Rotary Club of Spring Hill & Thompson Station.

Nashville Homes – Luxury Lakefront Home on Old Hickory Lake

With every passing day, Nashville gains world-wide recognition as “the place to be.”   For those of us that have lived here our whole lives, this comes as no surprise.

Simply put, the quality of life in Middle Tennessee cannot be beat!

In addition to all the excitement of downtown, another major contributor to the area’s quality of life is the proximity of lakes and rivers.  Living on the lake is a lifestyle that is unmatched, especially in this home on Old Hickory Lake that is now FOR SALE!

Why not prme rib?  Why not chocolate cake?  Why do the delicacies for the first day of the New Year have to be things with a nasty coin dropped in them?  Where all has that coin been anyway?  I hope no one ate it last year.

Here is the history of the New Year’s grub according to about.com:

The practice of eating black-eyed peas for luck is generally believed to date back to the Civil War. At first planted as food for livestock, and later a food staple for slaves in the South, the fields of black-eyed peas were ignored as Sherman’s troops destroyed or stole other crops, thereby giving the humble, but nourishing, black-eyed pea an important role as a major food source for surviving Confederates.

Today, the tradition of eating black-eyed peas for the New Year has evolved into a number of variations and embellishments of the luck and prosperity…

Good News for Veterans, and Active-Duty too!

With Veterans Day being this week, I would like to take the opportunity to reach out to all Veterans and Active-Duty military personnel that may be thinking about purchasing a new home.

The great folks at THDA are always on the forefront of great programs that encourage home ownership, and they have a special program just for Veterans and Active Duty military.  You don’t even have to use your VA Eligibility to use the program either… but you can and save even more!

This exciting program is called “Home Ownership for the Brave.”  For more information, CLICK HERE.   I just had the honor of welcoming a veteran who used this program into his new home last Friday!

This program is a valuable tool and can be used in many circumstances.  Already have another VA Loan?  Already used your VA acquisition limit?  Debt Ratio issues?  Simply want a lower interest rate?  If you answered yes to any of these, you need to explore this program!

If you have a preferred mortgage lender, give them a call.  If you don’t call me and I will recommend one!

Mortgage interest rates are lower than they have ever been.  Why not pursue the dream of owning your home?  An Ole South model home is a great place to start

Today, our HBAMT Sales & Marketing Council had the opportunity to tour each of the homes featured on the Parade.  This year’s parade is one of the best yet and is truly worth taking the time to visit.

My photography skills are not the greatest, so you really should see each home for yourself.  No picture would do these fantastic homes justice!

Eleven years and counting….

Eleven years ago today, we were devastated by the news that America was under attack.

Now it is once again September 11th, eleven years after the terrorist attacks on our native soil.

Now, Osama Bin Laden is dead.  We are fortunate that terrible acts orchestrated by terrorists have not taken place in our country.  Or have they?

I wrote a commentary last September that I feel I need to re-post because my feelings have not changed over the past year.  If you have a few minutes, please give it a read…
